"The American Spirit came rising out of the ashes of the September 11 tragedy like a great phoenix. The pain and the fire at the heart of America caused our spirits to burn. For the moment we had forgotten our superficial vanity. For the time we had redefined our heroes as most of a nation paused to care for the wounded. Now, we mourn as a community of ordinary heroes. We live our lives with a bright spirit of compassion, under a dark shadow of doom."
